F.E.A. is a sophisticated analytical technique used by specialist engineers to determine the integrity and fitness for purpose of all types of plant, equipment and products. IDEAS prides itself in being one of a select number of international engineering consultancies who can provide a comprehensive F.E.A. service. IDEAS has achieved this position through acquiring engineers who are experts in their disciplines with an impressive track record over many years. It is their experience which enables IDEAS to exploit the full power of the latest Computer Aided Engineering systems.

Project:    Stability Analysis of Vacuum Pressure Vessel.

Buckling of a Pressure Vessel

This project involved the Stability Analysis of a large pressure Vessel which was subjected to full vacuum pressure conditions. The purpose of the analysis was to demonstrate that during start-up of the plant, the vessel would not collapse under the high vacuum conditions.

Initially an Eigensolution approach was undertaken using Finite Element Analysis techniques, from which the critical buckling pressure and fundamental Eigenvector were determined. As this approach provides an upper bound estimate of the critical buckling pressure, the analysis was further verified by a full Non-Linear Large Deflection Stability Analysis, which showed a nominal variation in the critical buckling pressure.
