Project: Corrosion, Liquid Sloshing & Vessel Integrity Assessment of an FPSO Vessel
Our client found that internal baffles had failed on a pressure vessel situated on a FPSO. They decided to carry out NDT to try and quantify the integrity of the vessel. Whilst undertaking the inspection they also found a large variety of corrosion patches. The situation was very concerning, where the client had a large pressure vessel on an FPSO, with no protection from liquid sloshing within the vessel as the ship heaved, pitched and rolled, plus the added complication that the main vessel integrity had been degraded due to the heavy corrosion patches found in the system. Conventional approaches to the assessment by others, gave very negative results and the client faced a major unplanned shut down. Pressure vessel engineers were floundering to provide an assessment, because 'FPSO plant integrity cannot be quantified by current design codes & technology'. I.D.E.A.S..were called in and carried out the very complex fluid sloshing assessment, but also incorporated this with the equally important fluid/structural interaction to fully assess the problem. The dynamic loadings were determined form actual ship response measurements and this was followed by dynamically assessing the corrosion defects and carrying out a full fatigue and fracture assessment to produce a true and realistic vessel integrity assessment. The result was that although damaged, the vessel was 'fit for service' for many months until the planned shutdown.
The client saved millions of pounds, safety was quantified and I.D.E.A.S..were asked to then assess every key item of pressurised plant on the FPSO, so that a full integrity statement could be obtained.
